As the bioeconomy takes center stage in Nova Scotia’s economic future, Greenspring Bioinnovation Hub is advancing its mission with the leadership of new Executive Director, J. Royden Trainor, K.C..
A lawyer by training and a member of the Nova Scotia Barristers Society, Trainor brings national experience in public policy and legal counsel, along with over thirty years in government and industry leadership. He has guided complex initiatives in regulatory modernization, renewable energy infrastructure, and commercialization, combining deep policy expertise with practical stakeholder engagement to deliver tangible results.
Highlighting the opportunities ahead for Nova Scotia’s bioeconomy, Royden shared, “Our best wins will be shared wins, because innovation prospers when we work together. By connecting industry, Indigenous leadership, research partners, and other innovators, Greenspring ensures capital follows and companies scale here in Nova Scotia. Done right, this makes our province a leader in the low-carbon, circular economy and shows the world what can be achieved right here at home.”
In recent years, Greenspring Bio has advanced strategic initiatives such as Atlantic BIOCON, GreenShoots, RapidFermTech, and the Southwest Nova Scotia BDO Zone. Together, these programs demonstrate Greenspring Bio’s commitment to supporting entrepreneurs, strengthening industry capacity, and advancing innovation across Nova Scotia’s bioeconomy. Under Trainor’s leadership, Greenspring Bioinnovation Hub will continue to advance its existing initiatives while creating new opportunities that drive innovation, collaboration, and sustainable development.
“Nova Scotia is experiencing significant momentum in the bioeconomy, and Greenspring Bioinnovation Hub is committed to ensuring this growth continues for years to come,” said Allan Eddy, Board Chair, Greenspring Bioinnovation Hub. “Royden’s expertise and leadership will help strengthen the relationships and opportunities that drive this sector forward.”
The Board also recognized the contributions of outgoing Executive Director, Rod Badcock, who helped launch and lead Greenspring Bioinnovation Hub over the past decade. His dedication and leadership have been instrumental in shaping Nova Scotia’s bioeconomy and positioning Greenspring Bio as a trusted catalyst for innovation. Rod will remain as strategic advisor until the end of the year to ensure a smooth transition.
“As I step back from the Executive Director role, I am confident that Royden is exceptionally well-suited to lead Greenspring Bioinnovation Hub,” shared Rod Badcock. “He brings the skills and perspective needed to guide Nova Scotia’s bioeconomy into its next stage of growth.’
The Greenspring Bioinnovation Hub Board also expressed appreciation for its directors, whose steady guidance continues to be essential to the Hub’s mission and growth.
